I recommend the movie wholeheartedly but go in with tempered expectations. Unfortunately, it comes at the expense of a deeper narrative and emotional weight. One one hand, it gives us incredibly cool action scenes and plenty of comedy. 2 feels a bit commercialized in that way. The original Guardians of the Galaxy was an unexpected hit, and between then and now, it has become a household name. I had a good time watching Vol 2, but couldn’t help feeling like things were a bit overplayed. There’s no denying that Vol 2 is an enjoyable movie, but it’s a bit forgettable due to the storytelling structure and multiple side stories. It’s a funny movie that has a bit of heart, but it fails to live up to the original in many ways. Fan favorite characters like Drax (David Bautista) and Groot (Vin Diesel) get less screen time than I would’ve liked, but we do get some funny scenes with them nonetheless. These additional scenes flesh out the background of secondary characters like Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Nebula (Karen Gillan), as well as introduce new characters like Mantis (Pom Klementieff). When the movie isn’t focused on the main plot, we get to experience several fun team-ups in the various subplots.
